Oxford, NC - If trends continue, then the future looks very bright for Head Coach Lester Carpenter and the Winston-Salem State University men's golf team. Coach Carpenter and the Rams placed sixth out of nine teams at the St. Augustine's College Golf Classic this past weekend.
The Rams, who were much improved over their first outing that came only a week ago, look to be making great strides in their first season of men's golf competition in over 17 years. The Rams turned in an aggregate team score of 783. WSSU recorded a 404 on Sunday, and a 379 on Monday as they bettered their first-day score by an impressive 25 strokes.
Perennial CIAA Golf power Fayetteville State won the event with a 626 aggregate score (319/307) while the Eagles of North Carolina Central were the tournament's runners-up with a 656 (330/326). Rounding out the top three were the Vikings of Elizabeth City State who tallied a 739 (377/362).
The Rams will return to action on the 4th of April as they travel to Richmond, VA to face the St. Augustine's College Falcons and Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith in a one-day tournament before competing against all of the CIAA teams on the 5th and 6th of April in the final two-day match before the CIAA Golf Championships.
