Charlotte, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams golf team sits in sixth place, only one stroke out of fifth place, after the first day of the 2004 CIAA Golf Championship at Sunset Hills Golf Club in Charlotte, NC.
The Rams, who have finished seventh three times in the 2004 season made a drastic improvement on Thursday afternoon as they are in their first season of competition after a 17 year layoff.
The Rams received a surprising contribution from Ernest Timmons on Thursday afternoon as he led the Rams with a team-low 88. Only two strokes behind was 2004's most impressive Ram golfer Brett Lindquist who shot a 90.
After the first day of competition, Fayetteville State leads as they fired a 306 on the afternoon. Not far behind were the Eagles of North Carolina Central University who tallied a 318, and the Vikings of Elizabeth City State who turned in a 347.
The Rams are ahead of Virginia Union (404), Virginia State (433), and St. Paul's College (461) and sit in sixth place only one stroke behind fifth-place St. Augustine's College who recorded a 389.
The teams resume action in the final day of the Championship on Friday at 10:00 am at the Sunset Hills Golf Club.
